As our existing clients are well aware Peter Silley is a well-travelled and respected microbiologist on an international stage. A first degree from the University of Birmingham in Bacteriology and a doctorate from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne within the Department of Agricultural Biochemistry and Nutrition were the academic foundations upon which his experience has been built. Appointments within the pharmaceutical industry with Cyanamid, ICI, and Glaxo, public sector positions with the Department of Agriculture and academic appointments with Queen's University of Belfast and the University of Bradford demonstrate his breadth of experience. Indeed Peter is currently Visiting Professor in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Bradford and is also becoming closely involved within the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton. Peter has extensive experience of the European and US regulatory systems with regard to microbiological requirements for successful registration of antimicrobial compounds, feed additives and biocides. Working in Europe and the USA and more recently in Japan, Australia and Canada gives him a valuable insight into how companies can design studies to meet respective worldwide regulatory requirements. With significant experience of public health and infectious disease, the antimicrobial resistance issues and involvement in risk analysis MB Consult can provide expertise on the right approach to address safety and efficacy issues in today's onerous regulatory climate.
Since 1990 Peter has been involved in microbiology on a wider stage; a past-President of the Society for Applied Microbiology and involvement in other learned microbiology societies. He has advised the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA) on New Technology and represented IFAH on the VICH Microbial Safety Task Force. He is a Member of the NOAH Antibiotics Working Party, past Board Member of the European Federation of Biotechnology and participates in a number of microbiology standards committees including his appointment as a Voting Member of the CLSI Subcommittee on Veterinary Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing. He has recently been asked to serve as a member of the UK Health Protection Agency subgroup with a remit to develop R & D collaborations within and outwith the HPA. Peter is regularly invited to speak at international microbiology meetings and is an author of more than 50 scientific publications.
